FCHS Class of 2020 Virtual Graduation and Celebration Video

Dear Class of 2020 Parents/Guardians,

We are pleased to write with information about the production of our Class of 2020 Virtual Graduation and Celebration Video.  Our current streaming date for the pre-recorded Virtual Graduation and Celebration Video is Thursday, July 2 at 2:00 pm.  More details will follow on how to stream and watch the video.  The Virtual Graduation Ceremony also will be broadcast on FCPS Channel 99 at a date and time to be determined.

The purpose of this video is to celebrate our seniors, acknowledge their achievement of earning their high school diploma, and create a keepsake memory for them.  The format of this video will be a hybrid between a traditional graduation ceremony and a celebration of our seniors’ accomplishments.  We hope to include some of our graduation traditions and speeches, as well as highlights of what makes our school and Class 2020 special.  Although the video does not replace an in-person graduation, we are excited about this opportunity to honor our seniors as safely as possible. 

Your senior will receive communication from Herff Jones and partners Marching Orders and Stage Clips in addition to Falls Church HS in his or her account.  The emails will detail both how to upload the student’s photo (preferably in cap and gown) and the text that will be shown when the student’s name is announced.  For uniformity, the photo should be a portrait-style image of the face, head and shoulders with a solid background and must be compatible with the K-12 educational environment and good citizenship.  The photograph and text must be submitted by Friday, June 12

To participate, your student must reply that he or she wishes to do so by uploading his/her photo.  If your student does not want to participate, please email Peter Lake ( by Wednesday, June 10.

Please review the email with your senior to ensure that the necessary timelines are strictly met.

Your student may also choose to upload an optional individual student video clip. This 10-15 second clip will not be included in the virtual graduation and celebration video.  Instead, the optional video clip will be made available only to the individual student through a unique URL that will be sent by the vendor’s email to such student.  Each such student may download his or her individual clip to personal social media and digital platforms, if the student wishes.

All student submissions (including name, photo, and student biographical information for official, school-sponsored activities and awards, and other student message) must be consistent with the K-12 educational environment and with good citizenship and will be subject to review by school officials.

After the streaming of the Class of 2020 Virtual Graduation and Celebration Video, students and parents will be given directions on how to download the video as a personal keepsake.

The goal for our school is to have participation by all seniors who wish to do so in accordance with the above information.  We want to ensure that every such student is represented and be able to provide every such student with a lasting memory and keepsake that can be revisited for years to come. We look forward to celebrating our seniors as a school community, and we are excited about having your senior participate in this celebration.

In-person Photo Opportunity

Dear Class of 2020 Students and Parents/Guardians,

Our plans to celebrate the Class of 2020 are taking shape and we are excited to share them with you.

We have developed a plan to provide an opportunity to photograph seniors at school. We know how important a graduation photo is for students and their families to mark this important milestone. This process was developed based on current data and guidance from the Fairfax County Health Department and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  It includes specific practices for social distancing and steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

We ask for everyone’s cooperation to make sure all seniors and their families have a safe and enjoyable experience during their scheduled time. The photo op event will be hosted outside. It will be facilitated in an expedited drive-thru fashion (5 minutes per student) over multiple days. Graduates (dressed in cap and gown) and their families will remain in their vehicle until it is time to be called to the set-up area.  All photographs must be taken within a 5-minute time frame to allow for seamless transition to the next student. Graduates and their family who choose to walk to the school will be accommodated. 

This is a great opportunity to include your diploma in the picture so please remember to bring it with you. You will receive your diploma on June 3rd, 4th or 5th at the item delivery event.

We will be reaching out to provide more detail about scheduling a time for your family and more logistics for your photo opportunity when available.

Health and Safety Requirements: 

We will follow all health guidelines as provided by the Health Department.

  • Students and family members (in one vehicle) will have a health survey completed by a staff member on the scheduled day of their photo op.
  • Social distancing of 6 feet or more will be maintained at all times.
  • Photo-op will last no more than 5 minutes.
  • Per CDC guidelines, students and family members will wear facial masks until the time that they have their photo taken.  
  • Per CDC guidelines, there will be no more than 10 persons total permitted at the photo location including FCPS staff.
  • Persons over the age of 65 will not be permitted at the photo op UNLESS they are currently residing within the student’s household. 

Staff members (1-2) will be present at the informal photo opportunity. For the safety of our graduates, families and staff will not be able to shake hands or engage in physical interaction. A professional photographer will be available to take a photo of graduates/families.  Families will be able to order photos and purchase through the photographer at a later date.

We will continue to provide updates and information about graduation activities, and we look forward to honoring the senior class in the weeks to come.

Hello Senior Parents/Guardians and the Class of 2020:

Thank you for your patience as we finalize end-of-year plans for the Class of 2020. This update includes important upcoming meeting dates/times and the plan for material collection (laptops, textbooks, obligations, etc.) and distribution of caps & gowns, diplomas, cords and stoles. There is a lot of logistical information so please read carefully.


Class Meetings


A Senior class meeting will take place on Wednesday, May 27th at noon (12:00 pm). The link will be posted one hour before the meeting through the FCHS Class of 2020 Google Classroom.

Senior Dues

Senior dues have been reduced to $50. This fee will go towards the Class of 2020’s graduation costs including cap and gown, diploma and diploma cover, and graduation programs. For those who have not paid, the preferred payment system is MySchoolBucks. Please complete your payment by May 29th.

Collecting Materials and Distributing Caps & Gowns, Diplomas

Materials collection and distribution of caps & gowns and diplomas will take place at FCHS on June 3rd - 5th.

Important Safety Protocols

  • Post a sign in the front window of your car with student name and ID#. The sign must be visible to school staff when you pull up.
  • Wiping down items before returning them is appreciated.
  • If you are not feeling well, please do not report to school.
  • School staff will be wearing masks and gloves during pick-up/drop-off times.  We ask that anyone who is dropping off or picking up items please do the same. 
  • Please remain in your car at all times. 
  • To limit contact, school staff will access the back seat or trunk/hatchback to retrieve and deliver items.  Please do not hand items out the vehicle window.

Schedule & Process

Students have been assigned a specific date/time to come to FCHS. The exact date/time will be emailed to students' email account. The window of time is based on their school counselor and is shown in the table below.

Students who are unable to to attend this event should contact their counselor or Peter Lake.



Cars should enter the school parking lot through the entrance for the main gym (Door #8). See map of traffic flow below. Please follow the line and do not jump ahead of anyone.

Due to safety concerns, students who plan to walk to this event should report to Station A on Friday, June 5th at 10:30 am.



Station A: Check-in

  • School staff will provide instructions and begin the process here.

Station B: Technology Collection (laptop and charger) 

School staff will collect school-issued laptops and chargers here.  The charger must be the Dell 65W charger that was issued with the laptop or a replacement charger that was purchased through MySchoolBucks.  If a replacement charger was purchased elsewhere, it must be a Dell charger that is compatible with the school laptop.

  • School staff will retrieve the laptop/charger from the back seat or trunk/hatchback of each car.  Please remain in your car at all times.

The cost for each tech item is as follows and both are listed on MySchoolBucks: 

  • FCPSOn Laptop (includes a charger) – Dell Latitude 3300:  $467
  • FCPSOn Charger (only) – Dell Power Adapter:  $28

Station C: Other Materials Collection 

School staff will collect any additional school-issued items here (textbooks, calculators, library books, novels issued through English classes, cameras, etc.).

Students should check their email for notifications on what items have been issued to them this year. 

  • All items must be in one plastic/paper bag (except for musical instruments).
  • The bag must be labelled with student name and ID#.
  • School staff will retrieve the bag from the back seat or trunk/hatchback of each car.  Please remain in your car at all times.

Station D: Cap & Gown, Awards, Diploma Distribution

School staff will distribute caps & gowns, diplomas, awards, cords, graduation programs here.

Dear Class of 2020 and Parents/Guardians,

We hope that this message finds you well. FCPS has provided guidance and we are now able to proceed with planning Class of 2020 graduation activities!  While we are all disappointed that we will not have a traditional graduation ceremony this Spring, we are excited to share some ways we can commemorate our seniors’ time as Jaguars. They will be sorely missed!

A Class of 2020 celebration video will be produced for each high school. This will be a professionally produced virtual event which will allow each student to submit a small video, a brief statement and a picture. Everyone, students, family and friends will be able to watch the event online, and students will be able to download a copy of the event at no cost. Please stay tuned for more information about this!  

We are also in the process of setting up a schedule for seniors to safely come to the school to return laptops and materials and receive their diplomas, caps & gowns and other awards. We will be setting up a special place for an individual graduate photo opportunity, with each graduate wearing their cap and gown along with cords and medals. A limited number of family members will be permitted to join the graduate. A more detailed message with this procedure will be coming out shortly.

Thank you parents/guardians for standing by your Jaguars for the past four years. Even if our celebration is not exactly as we pictured it, it is still a time to honor these students’ amazing accomplishments. We want to also thank you for your understanding and support every day, but especially during this time.
